Course Information

Learning Objectives

1) Identify at least 3 myths and historical factors that have confounded understanding of dissociation and the dissociative disorders.  2) Describe how evidence of dissociative disorders has been observed in neuroimaging research.  3) Explain why assessment for pathological dissociation is a necessary prerequisite to trauma accessing and reprocessing.  4) Name 3 documents essential to the process of administering, scoring, and interpreting the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation.

Timed Outline

Part 1 (90 minutes) Myths and facts | History of diagnosing dissociative disorders | Forms and models of dissociation | What is assessment  Part 2 (90 minutes) Available assessment tools | Background of the MID | Administering and Scoring the MID | 23 symptoms according to the MID

Level of Content

Introductory. No prerequisite knowledge beyond graduate training in a field related to mental health is presumed.

Workshop Summary

Greater awareness of trauma-related symptoms and increased prominence of therapies focused on trauma resolution necessitates clarification of current and historical myths and misconceptions regarding pathological dissociation. Despite neuroscientific studies substantiating the reality and credibility of dissociative disorders, historical and confounding factors still linger with regard to defining and diagnosing the dissociative disorders. This workshop will utilize current literature and research to answer and dispel these misconceptions and aid clinicians in clearly defining and understanding the key features and concepts of pathological dissociation. This workshop will introduce participants to the Multidimensional Inventory of Dissociation (MID). The MID is a 218-item, self-administered instrument with 168 dissociation items and 50 validity items developed by Paul F. Dell, PhD. The MID reliably differentiates and offers a diagnostic impression for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Otherwise Specified Dissociative Disorder, Dissociative Identity Disorder, Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder. MID documents are available without charge to mental health professionals and researchers at www.mid-assessment.com. Participants are highly encouraged to download and review the MID Analysis, MID (questions) and Interpretive Manual in preparation for this training.

TARGET AUDIENCE This workshop is for trauma-focused psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, marriage and family therapists, counselors and substance abuse counselors. DISCLOSURES This workshop has not received outside sponsorship that would pose a conflict of interest.
